Dominican Lifestyle Lets set some things in motion. The cheaper the generator the louder and less time you can expect out of it. Having said that I have a 3.8 KW Coleman that I used to keep my batteries charged for 2 years on a 2.4 kw Xantrex inverter. It still runs almost daily as now it is used in a business my family has and I have upgraded to a bigger Generator. Rule of thumb. This is based only on my experience. Do your power budget of what you will not live with out even for a minute. Look at the size of your inverter add that to your power budget and add 500W. This is the smallest generator you can get by with. Now for every hour of inverter time you need 1/2 hour of charging time. There are tricks to long term inverter living. For instance you can run the generator until the batteries are charged and then wash your clothes. Or you can unplug the fridge for a couple of hours. The bottom line you can make it on a 3k generator and a 2k inverter and not suffer for lack of. It is all about planning. When you decide that the Dominican lifestyle is how you are going to live planning is forced upon you. In my current system I have is a 2.4kw Xantrex inverter hooked up to a bank of 8 batteries with a double throw switch. I have a Powermax XP4400 generator I charge the batteries when I have prolonged black outs. I use this daily for about 3 hours in the evening because we are not sure if we will get power back during the night.
