Hello all
I am John Sizemore. When I was eight years old my father was killed along with my first cousin in a training jump in the Army National Guard.
When I was 17 I joined my fathers unit and went to jump school myself. When I was 18 I wanted to go active Army but there was a 3 month wait so I joined the active Navy instead.
After my second basic training in under a year I was assigned to a ship stationed in the Western Pacific.
In three years I traveled to the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, Kenya, Pakistan, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Guam, and Diego Garcia.
When I completed my first tour of duty and I received orders to West Virginia near my home for recruiting duty. Can we say suck factor high, 3 years of no travel.
After that I was stationed at a Spec warfare unit. No guys I was not a snake eater just support. In the five years I was there I was deployed to Puerto Rico, Italy, the Azores and Honduras. I spent three months on a patrol coastal in West Africa where I visited the Canary Islands, Ghana, Cameroon, Togo and Guinea Bissau, Italy and mainland Spain.

Here's to you guys

Then I went to shore duty and only got to travel to Alaska for one trip. After I completed my three year shore duty I went on board my final ship for a period of four years.
On that Ship I went to Greece, Spain, France, Malta, Gibraltar, Tunisia, Bermuda, ST Thomas, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Croatia and Puerto Rico.
On May 31, 2005 I was transferred to the fleet reserve.
I went to work as a contractor in Afghanistan until the end of June 2006 and on 2 July I arrived in the DR. Now the real adventure has begun.

I came to the Dominican Republic four years ago and have been coming back since. I made a decision that I wanted to retire in the DR that first trip. But I decided it was wise to come back a few more times to make sure. I have not changed my mind. While researching my options I have had troubled finding the information I needed available in one location. As a military retiree I have more options than most people that retire here. One is I am under forty and not ready for a really relaxed life. Golf courses and fine dinning is not my cup of tea.
I am into biking, mountaineering and a few other extreme sports and I think I will begin more once I am there.

Good friend in Sosua Dominican Republic
Good weather good friends
I am not expert but as you see I have found contacts that have lived in the DR for many years that in my opinion are experts in each of their own ways. I intend to do a news letter at least once a month maybe more often as time permits. I will be telling you what I have experienced good and bad throughout the relocation process. I will take you step by step what all I will be doing for residency, apartment hunting, and yes my mountain biking trips to places with great eyeball liberty.
For those of you not from the  Navy that means looking at pretty girls.

I chose the DR for several reasons. One it is close to the US so it is not a problem there. Two the weather, three when I was there the first time promotions were not happening and after talking to expat's I realized that I could live well on a E-5 pension.
I retired as an E-6 so I will do really well.
I also found out that the interest rate for 30 month CDs in the local currency is running upwards of 20%.
So your money doubles every four years. These are not bad options. If you look at t he bottom of the page I have a link to the central bank for the current interest rates for certificates of deposit. If you have any questions please feel free to write to me. I will not lie to you if I do not know the answer but I bet I can find a source of information that can give us both the correct answer.
Also if you write to me please be patient. I want to take the time to get accurate information. I would prefer to tell you give me a few days to get the right information rather than just give you an answer now.
