Aquaponics is basically hydroponics mixed with Aquaculture.

I have spent the last year playing with the system to know it will work on a commercial scale here. Recently I moved to a new house and had to take apart my system and now I am rebuilding at the new house. Since I am in a rental I do not want to invest energy into some thing that has to be moved. My system at this point is very temporary,

Basically an over view of what is Aquaponics. You got this fish swimming around in a tank. Said fish eats and breathes. So we need to make sure you supply food and oxygen. We all know how to take care of that. Feed that fish and either have a fountain pump or an air pump or combination to take care of oxygen.

Now we have some other problems. The fish waste is basically poop and ammonia. We need to deal with them. So we have a pump that pumps a portion of the water through a gravel biofilter. The biofilter have bacteria living in it and through a Bio-alchemy process it is  turned into plant food. The water then goes on to a hydroponics grow area and is used to grow plants which take the nutrients out of the water and returns it to the fish nice and clean.

In temperate regions aquaponics is used in heated greenhouses. In the climate of my Dominican Tropical Homestead I avoid the most resource intensive part of the  process.
