About The Dominican Life Style My Dominican Tropical Homestead |
|
Dominican Lifestyle What we have here is a 55 gallon plastic barrel filled with gravel. I have a piece of 1 inch PVC pipe that runs down to about an inch from the bottom, The water enters the top and works its way down through the gravel where the bacteria do their Bio-Alchemy and change the fish waste to something a little less harsh for the fish and makes it the perfect plant food. The exit side of the pipe has a small hole drilled near the top for air. If I cover the bottom of the discharge pipe and wait for water to squirt out of the air hole. Then I cover the air hole and pull my hand off the discharge a siphon is created and all the concentrated solid material that has collected will be pulled out. I do this once a day and my gravel filter then becomes my clarifier. I have some watercress seeds directly sown in here that have not sprouted yet. I will start experimenting with the green goop I get from the clarifier to see it will make a nice mater mix for hydroponics. ![]() This is a short video on how I clean my filter.
